Tips for riding in the cool – bike gear

05/11/2025

For some fair weather riders, like myself, keeping the wheels turning in the fall and winter months in Victoria becomes a bit of a hassle. The crisp air settles and a light sprinkle of rain covers the sky for days, Victorians know that this change in season means it’s time to prepare for fall and winter riding. We’ll delve into some of the measures to take for safe riding in the fall and winter months specifically regarding bike gear.

Although our coastal climate is quite mild compared to other Canadian cities, the weather can challenge riders who aren’t prepared or geared up properly. Whether you’re commuting to work, cycling for fitness, or simply enjoying the scenic views around the island, adjusting your bike gear for the colder months is key to staying comfortable, dry, and safe on the road.  To learn more about personal clothing and road safety, please see our last posts.

Tires

Skinner, smooth tires are typically made for roads and paved paths. They splay water better due to their higher pressure (PSI) and are lighter, giving you a smooth faster ride. Reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

Although, the reduced contact with the road creates a higher risk of slipping. Especially on road paint lines, metal, leaves and danger while turning.

Wider tires provide more stability on roads and gravel – like sections on the Galloping Goose and Lochside Trail. The knobs on the tires grip the ground better but are often heavier, making you a bit slower. In the grand-scheme of things, having more grip and contact with the road is a good thing, consider lowering your tire pressure slightly.

Lights

Lezyne Rear Lights

Darker clouds and rain reduce visibility – not only for cars but pedestrians and other cyclists. Bike lights are important to be as visible as possible but being able to identify road hazards around you.

There are two types of lights – to be seen and to see.

  • Front lights, higher lumen lights should be angled down to the road as to not blind others on the road and shine light on your upcoming path.
  • Rear lights should be flashing to allow cars to see you from behind better.

Fenders & Waterproof Bags

If your bike didn’t come with fenders, it is a great time to look into adding them to your bike – save yourself the mess! Your back tire will kick up all sorts of water, dirt and grime from the road… straight up your back and into your face. If you’re cycling with friends, they’ll thank you for the fenders and mudguards!

Pannier bags like Ortlieb are waterproof, some with sectioned pockets and come with a 5 year warranty! If you’re worried, put your phone, wallet and any important electronics inside another leak-proof plastic bag.

Repair Kits

EVOC Repair Kit

A simple repair kit can go a long way. It doesn’t need to hold much but if you have one, you should know how to use it (or know how to ask people nicely on the trail for help)

Repair kit fir daily commuting:

  • spare tube (right size for your bike)
  • tire levers
  • multitool
  • patch kit
  • mini pump
  • duct tape
  • zip ties

A longer, more technical ride, consider other tools and equipment and potentially a small first aid kit.

Clean Your Bike!

Chain Lube Bike

Keeping your bike functioning at it’s best comes down to your motivation, especially post ride. Everyone has an opinion of how often and the extent of what you should do. As a general rule after a wet/muddy ride:

wipe down your bike

  • warm soapy water, rinse it all off, dry it!

check your chain

  • is it dry? is it rusting? is it dirty?

clean your drive train

  • degreasing your drive train, re-lube your chain

Taking these few extra steps, especially cleaning your bike will help protect the longevity, functionality and safety of your bike. Give us a call to book in your seasonal tune up (778) 432 0255 or send us an email.
